Overview
The Daio Wasabi Farm is one of the most unique attractions in Nagano Prefecture, and the largest wasabi farm in Japan. Located in the peaceful countryside of Azumino, just north of Matsumoto, the farm covers about 15 hectares and has been producing premium wasabi since 1915.
Even if you are not particularly interested in wasabi, the farm is worth visiting for its beautiful scenery. Crystal-clear spring water flows through meticulously maintained gravel beds where the wasabi plants are cultivated. Various paths and bridges allow you to walk around the farm, with some nice viewpoints and cafes to be found along the way.
Visitors can stroll through the grounds for free, sample unusual wasabi-flavored foods such as wasabi ice cream, and learn how authentic Japanese wasabi is grown. Unlike the green paste commonly served overseas, real wasabi has a fresher, more complex flavor, and is surprisingly mild. The ice cream is an absolute must, although it sounds weird, it's actually super delicious.
Most people spend between one and two hours here, making it an excellent day trip from Matsumoto or Hakuba, and a worthwhile inclusion as part of a weekend trip from Tokyo.

The Daio Wasabi Farm is located just north of Matsumoto, which is about 3 hours from Tokyo by train. If you're relying on public transport, then you just need to catch a train to Hotaka Station, which will take 26 minutes. From here, it's only an 8-minute taxi ride to the farm. There is also a bus from Hotaka Station that runs on weekends and holidays from May to October, you can check the timetable here.

The largest wasabi farm in Japan,
Has been in operation for over 100 years.
The farm requires pristine, highly oxygenated running water that stays at a strict temperature between 10°C and 15°C all year round.
Between May and October, vast networks of black netting cover the fields to protect them from direct sunlight.
You should expect to spend between 1-2 hours here. The farm is quite large and enjoyable to explore, with some nice cafes and scenic viewpoints.
You'll notice a stunning emerald-green river with three watermills near the entrance, these were part of a movie set installation back in 1989 for the film Dreams, by director Akira Kurosawa.
