Most people are familiar with the big-name luxury hotel brands, however, boutique hotels are becoming more popular as we begin to seek out a unique experience from our accommodation. This increase in demand has led to a number of new boutique hotels popping up, with some of the major brands also getting on board.
Most boutique hotels come with a high price tag, so how do you know if it's worth your money? How do you know which location to choose? And how can you trust the recommendations on other websites? We aim to solve all of these problems and save you time. By combining our expert knowledge with data analysis, we've developed a definitive list of the best boutique hotels in Tokyo.
Our Expertise
I worked as a private tour guide for affluent travellers in Japan for 3 years, and on top of this, I worked for the Park Hyatt resort in Niseko, Hokkaido. This experience has given me unique insights and specialised knowledge regarding the luxury hotel market in Japan. So I decided to compile these lists based on my expertise, to save people time and help them avoid disappointment.
In addition, to remove my own personal bias, I've analyzed data from thousands of customer reviews, and use these metrics to determine an accurate list, showcasing the best hotels.
Time is more valuable than money. Unlike other websites, this is not a generic article with a top ten list, instead of providing you with a subjective opinion full of sponsored content and Google Ads, this article gives you measurable data and metrics.
The only filters I've personally applied are:
A minimum average review score of 9 out of 10.
A maximum of 100 rooms, and ideally, below 50.
Must have distinctive or artistic design elements.
The location must be convenient for sightseeing.
A minimum of 50 reviews.
It must have a vibe, such as understated humility, a hidden gem feel, or concepts that challenge the traditional hotel framework.

Our large (80 sq m) Japanese style room was beautifully equipped in every respect. There are an array of excellent restaurants which we frequently enjoyed. "Amazing hotel in an excellent location, super friendly and helpful staff. We had a gorgeous well-designed room with fabulous views of the city and it was equipped with everything you could dream of. Mini bar was also included in the rate and the bathroom had really nice luxurious amenities. Spotless room and the whole hotel felt very clean. The attention to detail is unbelievable, sliding doors in the suite offer you a more spacious feeling, or more privacy if you want to bathe quietly. We had breathtaking views across central Tokyo, one of the bedrooms had Mt. Fuji in the background. The panoramic view from the lounge area was simply amazing. Closing Thoughts
I've recently become interested in the health benefits of sauna, so for me, the Hotel Gajoen is at the top of my list, as they include personal saunas in every room. Next up would be the Bellustar, I love high-rise city views, and adding the boutique charm to a high-rise hotel is exactly what I'm looking for. Either way, whichever choice you make, all of the hotels on this list will impress and surprise you in different ways.
