Overview
Jojakkoji is a 400-year-old (est. 1596) temple located on the hillside just 5 minutes from the famous bamboo grove in Arashiyama. It's one of the most beautiful temples in Arashiyama, featuring mossy gardens, a small viewpoint, a 12-meter-high pagoda, and hundreds of maple trees. It's famous among locals for its stunning autumn colours and impressive landscape design.
Although it's much calmer than the well-known Tenryuji Temple, it's become more popular in recent years, so you should expect it to be somewhat crowded during the peak autumn season. However, during the rest of the year, it serves as a quiet retreat only 5 minutes walk from the busy bamboo forest.
Jojakkoji is expressive in every season and is worth a visit throughout the year, you'll find cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, and colourful maple leaves in autumn.
