Overview
Zojo-ji is a beautiful temple that sits at the base of Tokyo Tower, in the peaceful Shiba Park. The natural scenery within the park combines perfectly with the traditional temple buildings, the Tokyo skyline, and the iconic Tokyo Tower. The temple is about 600 years old, originally founded in 1393, and was moved to its current location in 1598. This move was ordered by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, who declared it to be the temple for his family.
It's somewhat of a hidden gem for autumn leaves as it's less busy than Tokyo's popular gardens, and not many people venture beyond the main area, so make sure you wander around the temple if you want to experience the beautiful scenery featured in our photos.
Aside from the lovely views, one of the most impressive landmarks is the massive Sangedatsu-mon gate, which was constructed in 1622 and has survived earthquakes, fires, and wars for hundreds of years. It's currently undergoing restoration works, which are scheduled to be completed in 2035.
The remaining buildings are reconstructions that were built in the 1950s, due to the damage from WWII. The temple hosts an interesting museum that showcases the elaborate buildings that existed before the war, and a scale model of the original temple.

Originally founded in 1393, and was moved to its current location in 1598.
The designated temple for the Tokugawa shogunate, who ruled Japan for 260 years. Six of the fifteen shoguns are buried here, making it one of the most historically important temple sites in Japan.
Used to be a massive temple complex containing over 120 structures, only a few were rebuilt after WWII.
The main gate, the Sangedatsu-mon, was built in 1622 and survived both the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and WWII air raids.
The gate's name, Sangedatsu-mon, literally means “Gate of the Three Liberations” and is believed to remove greed, anger, and foolishness upon passing through it.
