An expert list showcasing the best sauna hotels in Tokyo based on expert knowledge and customer reviews
The Mandarin Oriental
Overview
I, am a sauna man. A couple of years ago I began experimenting with saunas and soon found myself addicted. This may come as a surprise to most foreign visitors, but Tokyo has some of the best saunas out of any major city in the world. This stems from a thriving spa culture centred around hot springs and public baths, with saunas forming a key part of the experience. So I decided to publish this list to help people like me find the best hotels with saunas in Tokyo, as it's somewhat time-consuming to search for these by yourself.
Our Expertise
I've lived, worked, and travelled all over Japan for many years. Frustrated with the generic recommendations of other websites, I decided to publish these hotel articles based on my personal knowledge and experience. On top of this knowledge, I've analyzed thousands of customer reviews to determine an accurate selection of the best hotels. Instead of providing a subjective opinion full of sponsored content and Google Ads, this article gives you measurable data and metrics.
To ensure there's no disappointment, all of the options on this list must adhere to our strict criteria:
- An average review score above 8.5/10
- A minimum of 50 reviews
- Location must be convenient for sightseeing
- The property must have quality photos
- This list will be updated yearly
Our listing for each place has an efficient overview including a:
Curated Gallery

"The view of Mount Fuji was incredible. Six minutes walk from train and departure lounge. The staff are freindly and helpful. Free mini bar with water, beer, sake, green tea, orange juice and coffee machine. Great breakfast. Definitely go to Il Ristorante, really calm, views over river and fantastic service. Used the onsen twice on our short stay, a fantastic experience and a great way to end our 12 days in Japan... Would highly recommend staying here!"

The Villa Fontaine houses two buildings, the Premier is for the larger, upmarket rooms, and the Grand is for the smaller, value-minded rooms. However, the luxurious facilities are shared, this means you can experience the high-end onsen, spa, and sauna without having to pay for an upmarket room. This works out to be an amazing deal, and the rooms at the Grand are still super nice. They even offer anime-themed rooms in case you want something more colorful or simply want to impress the kids.

"An exceptional space of Zen-like tranquility in a busy location, full of restaurants and convenience stores, well served by Metro direct to Ginza /Tokyo /Shinjuku. Fabulous and helpful staff, amazing onsen and charming restaurant, dedicated workspace with a soundproofed cubicle, all scrupulously cleaned and maintained. Also, try the massage chair, which was much more than a gimmick. This hotel, at this price point, simply should not exist!"
