Overview
Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for the traditional farm houses known as gassho-zukuri (ga-sho-zu-ku-ri), which feature steep thatched roofs designed to handle the heavy snow that covers the region in winter. Today, many of the farmhouses have been turned into family-run guesthouses. Due to their limited availability, most of the gasshyo-zukuri get booked out months in advance. On top of this, reservation attempts can be difficult and time-consuming due to the lack of integration with online booking platforms.
How to reserve a Gassho-Zukuri?
At this stage, there's only one gassho-zukuri that has integrated with modern booking platforms, the Minshuku Kanjiya. It's a brand new listing on booking.com, but it receives glowing reviews on Google Maps.
For all the other properties, the local tourist association manages bookings for the gassho-zukuri. The booking windows open up anywhere from 3 to 9 months in advance, depending on the property, and typically sell out within hours. The most famous and beautiful village is called Ogimachi. Use the tourism website to check the availability of each property, and plan accordingly. The prices range from 10,000 to 30,000 JPY per night, which includes breakfast and dinner. The lodgings are very traditional and often lack the standard amenities of modern hotels, but they provide a unique experience with a special, and historical, atmosphere. Many of the buildings date back to the late 1700s.

The best alternative is the neighbouring town just across the river, which offers a small number of ryokans and hotels, and is only a 5-minute drive from the Ogimachi Village, some properties are within walking distance, and some provide transport. "As soon as you step through the entrance, you are transported into a dimension made of peace and harmony. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a must-visit if you want to spend a night in Shirakawa-go. Wonderfully located, we could walk to the village in 5 mins, and early morning was quiet, without tourists. The spacious ground floor had huge windows that opened up to the river next to it, with ensuite toilet and private onsen just next door. The Kanjiya Minshuku is the only gassho-zuchuri that can be reserved on modern booking platforms. This gorgeous farmhouse has been renovated to provide a comfortable experience while still retaining the historical elements that make these houses so charming. "I wanted to spend the night in Shirakawago and not be part of the day trippers. This was a great place to stay! Dinner is served at 6pm, breakfast at 7:30am, and check out is 9am. She will keep your luggage until you are ready to leave. We arrived in Shirakawago at 3pm and left on the bus the next day at 11:30. It was perfect. In the evening we were able to put on the provided yukata and take pictures around town in front of the buildings. A wonderful stay."

The Onyado Yuinosho is the perfect option if you want to combine your visit of Shirakawa-go with a luxurious hotel. "The hotel is super beautiful, with view on the river and indoor and outdoor onsen. I requested a vegetarian lunch and dinner and they were happy to adjust, and the dinner was exceptional! The staff was also super kind, helping us to use the shoe drier when it was raining heavily. The toilet is shared but is very close to the rooms and super clean. Added bonus was the hotel is just 210m from the bus station. We had a great stay. We will be back for sure."

The Kei Guesthouse
The Kei Guesthouse is an awesome hostel. The hosts are super kind and friendly, and speak very good English. The dorm rooms are surprisingly private, well-designed, and have comfy beds. The location is away from the main crowds but still convenient, there's a bus stop nearby, some restaurants, and it's a 20-minute walk from Ogimachi Village. It's also a great place to make friends, the atmosphere is super chill, which makes it perfect for socialising, and there's free tea and coffee provided throughout the day.

Kenkichi, the owner, picked me up from the bus station and within seconds I knew this was going to be a fun stay - he was such a jolly guy - a good change after so many hostels in Japan where people barely spoke to each other. This was the most social of them all. Made some good friends here, we played games. The hostel is very clean and comfortable. It's located about 2 kms from the gassho-houses and is easily reachable"
