Overview
Mt. Omuro is a beautiful conical volcano located on the Izu Peninsula, not far from the town of Ito. It reaches a height of 580 meters and provides stunning views that include the Amagi mountain range, the Izu coastline, and Mt. Fuji. Although hiking is not allowed, a fun chairlift takes visitors up the mountain in about 7 minutes. Here you'll find a walking path that runs along the rim of the volcano, an archery range at the bottom of the caldera, and a couple of small shops selling ice cream and mochi. It takes around 20-30 minutes to complete the walking trail, which also features a Shinto shrine and some old Buddhist statues.

Mt. Omuro is famous for its lush green color, which reaches its peak from May to September. This vibrant green color is largely thanks to a 700-year-old tradition that involves burning the entire mountain to clear away the old, dead grass. Known as the Yamayaki festival, it attracts hundreds of visitors and is typically held on the second Sunday in February each year. It's largely weather-dependent and is sometimes postponed due to rain or strong winds.

Mt. Omuro is located on the Izu Peninsula, just south of the town of Ito. The charilift can be accessed using the bus that runs from Izu Kogen Station, taking about 15 minutes, or a taxi, which takes about 10 minutes. The most convenient option is driving there from Ito, which takes about 25 minutes.
It's worth noting that on weekends during summer and autumn, the line for the chairlift can be very long, with waiting times of up to 1 hour, so it's best to arrive early to avoid the long wait.
The chairlift will be closed if there are strong winds, so keep an eye on the weather forecast, and check the status on their official website.

The Izu Peninsula is a lovely area with many attractions that make it worthy for a weekend trip. Mt. Omuro is located between two notable towns, Ito to the north, and Shimoda to the south. It's also an easy drive to Banjo Falls, Mt. Amagi, and the Izu Skyline road. The Kawazu Waterfall Trail is another notable attraction and a great place to spend a night in a traditional onsen ryokan.
